Sarah Carrier
Originally from Southern California, Sarah Carrier has played the flute for over 15 years. She earned a B.M. in Flute Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University in Long Beach. While in attendance, she was the recipient of the Alpha Sigma Iota scholarship for two consecutive years and recieved departmental acheivement as one of three leading performers distinguished in the area of Woodwind Studies. Her teachers included John Barcellona and Rena Urso Trapini. Recently, Sarah was the winner of the National Flute Association Masterclass Competition performing for New England Conservatory faculty and internationally renowned soloist, Paula Robison.
Since moving to New York, Sarah has become a candidate for the M.M. degree in Flute Performance at New York University, studying with teacher and mentor Robert Dick. As Robert Dick is highly sought after as a revolutionary flutist in the area of extended techniques, Sarah often intoduces improvisation, non-classical styles, and creative practice skills to her flute students. She also performs regularaly for N.Y.U. faculty member Keith Underwood.
While each student will vary in terms of repertoire choices, playing level, and age group, Sarah believes every student can gain a solid foundation that will contribute to their musical success. Areas of focus include: embouchure, articulation, technical facility, and efficient use of body, especially in terms of breathing and musical movement. She is also happy to share with students her knowledge of world music and ethnic ßutes such as: Irish Flute, Shakuhachi (Japanese Flute), Tin Whistle, Bansuri (Indian Flute), and Recorder.
