John Licari
John Licari is currently a graduate student at Hunter College in the Music Teacher Education Program and assistant to prolific composer Lera Auerbach on the Upper West Side. Originally from Orange County, NY, John has had two compositions published through HaMaR Percussion Publications since he has moved into New York City in February 2009. He has been spending most of the semester perfecting his Sibelius skills by freelancing as a composer, arranger, orchestrator and a copyist for the Hunter College music department. I also edit, proofread and engrave new works by Lera Auerbach and get them ready-for-publication. Her works are published by Hans Sikorski (Prokofiev and Shostakovich are also on their roster).
DRUMS & PERCUSSION
Aside from freelancing in composing/orchestrating, he is also an accomplished percussionist. He plays drums for the punk rock outfit The Black Hand and has gained much experience as a studio drummer, as well as picking up a few things on Pro Tools. Aside from being in a punk rock band, he also delves into classical percussion and jazz, playing in the Hunter Symphony and Chamber Music. He has shared the stage with renowned pianist Geoffrey Burleson performing three pieces by John Cage, and Sonata For Two Pianos and Percussion by Béla Bartók. He also plays snare drum in a marching band for The Professional Musicians of Orange County.
TEACHING SIBELIUS
He teaches Sibelius through an incremental method, which goes through the various features Sibelius offers and different ways to go about composition or preparation. These methods will help students gain speed and efficiency, which could be used on their theory homework, learning new music, analyzing music, and composing their own compositions.
