Jeremy Viner is an active performer, composer, and educator participating in a wide range of musical idioms. As a saxophonist and clarinetist, Jeremy has performed nationally and internationally with ensembles led by Steve Lehman, John Hollenbeck, Tim Berne, and David Moore among many others.
Jeremy received his B.A. from the New School in 2008 and his M.A. from The Juilliard School in 2010. At the New School Jeremy studied with many of the improvised music community’s important figures including Tyshawn Sorey, Vijay Iyer, Chris Speed, Tony Malaby, and Rudresh Mahanthappa. While at Juilliard, Jeremy studied interactive computer music composition with violinist/composer Mari Kimura and had the opportunity to learn from/perform with many of jazz’s celebrated post-bop musicians. These include Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride, Branford Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, and Kenny Barron - among many others. Jeremy can be heard on record with the twice GRAMMY nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, Bing and Ruth, Jesse Elder, and Elan Mehler. As an active participant in the jazz and new music communities of New York and elsewhere, Jeremy has performed at the Wordless Music Series, MATA Festival, Moers Festival, Darmstadt New Music Series, WFMU Festival, Stochastic Brooklyn, Bang On A Can Marathon, Palimpsestic Series, Undead Jazz Festival, Jazz Em Agosto, and many of the premier jazz and classical venues in New York City. Jeremy recently recorded an album with the Rafiq Bhatia Collective featuring Billy Hart, Vijay Iyer, the JACK string quartet, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble.
WOODWINDS AND PIANO
Jeremy takes a multi-faceted approach to teaching that is tailored to the student's interests and skill level. Lessons on the instrument are reinforced by the development of other musical skills off the instrument including music history, ear training, and music theory. On the instrument, lessons will cover sound production/intonation, rhythm, and technique - including exercises from the classical repertoire of the instrument. Methods of improvisation and phrasing are explored through the study and transcription of solos by jazz greats, jazz and classical music theory, and ear training.
COMPOSITION, MUSIC THEORY AND EAR TRAINING
Students wanting to concentrate on composition, music theory or ear training exclusively are encouraged to take separate lessons; though these areas can certainly be addressed (and most likely will be in some capacity) as part of an instrumental lesson.
Compositional techniques, including orchestration, melodic development, harmonic development, voice leading, rhythm and counterpoint, are investigated to aid in the development of the student's own compositions. Music Theory, from music fundamentals to modern theoretical concepts can be explored at length on their own or in the context of composition and/or improvisation. Ear training will be approached from both functional harmonic and atonal perspectives. Jeremy has an extensive collection of ear training exercises and concepts to be explored in detail. Harmonic juxtaposition is examined through ear training exercises and can also be discussed in the context of improvisation and composition according to the student's interests. Ear training students must either take lessons at the studio or have access to a piano in their home.
Jeremy's studio in Brooklyn comes equipped with a piano, drum set, rhodes, PA, guitar amp, and bass amp. Other advantages of taking lessons at the studio include the immediate access to Jeremy's music recordings and library of classical repertoire, music textbooks, and other relevant materials.
