Colin Killalea
Guitarist, saxophonist, singer, and composer Colin Killalea is a graduate of New School University’s jazz and contemporary music program, and counts Robert Sadin, Jane Ira Bloom, and Armen Donelian among the most influential of his instructors. Prior to attending The New School, Colin spent two years studying composition and arranging with the renowned Doug Richards, professor of music at Virginia Commonwealth University and musical director of the Great American Music Ensemble, one of the leading repertory jazz orchestras in the country.
Colin has performed in popular jazz venues with John D’earth (Dave Matthews, Bruce Hornsby, Miles Davis), Billy Hart (Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock), and Logan Richardson (Jason Moran, Greg Tardy). Also sought out for his pop and rock sensibilities, Colin was showcased at Bonnaroo 2008 as lead guitarist and backup vocalist for Don DiLego, and has recorded and co-produced with singer-songwriters Jesse Harper, Rebecca Stevens, and Wells Hanley. A singer-songwriter himself, Colin regularly performs in New York and elsewhere with his Brooklyn-based band, Pocketknife.
Colin is a great match for anyone wishing to develop a musical ear, learn about songwriting, or incorporate their singing voice with their instrument. With enthusiasm and a commitment toward crafting each lesson to the specific needs and goals of each student, Colin looks forward to making the learning experience both fun and rewarding.
Colin is currently not accepting any new students at this time. Let us help find you another teacher.
